How to Sprout Lentils: An Easy How to Guide

Sprouts do not exactly look that appetizing but..

Sprouts are a great way to get enzymes and nutrients provided within seeds, legumes and vegetables.  One of the benefits of sprouting produce is that the process of sprouting leaves food more digestible and nutrients easier to absorb.

They are surprisingly easy to make, and are pretty tasty when thrown on top of salad (all though, I would not recommend it in smoothies.. ehh).

As I reach my third month of veganism, I spend most of my time creating new and innovative ways of finding affordable yet healthy meal options. Seeds and legumes are a staple for most vegans and happen to be one of the most affordable food options for anyone on a budget and in need of good protein source.

So how do you sprout lentils, like I did above?

There are multiple methods but I personally utilized the "broke college-graduate minimalist method".

All it involves is a access to running water, a colander, and lentils.

Step 1:
Place 1/2 cup of dry lentils into a medium sized bowl. Submerge the lentils in cold water, allow for it to sit overnight (or at least up to 8 hours).

Step 2:
Once they have soaked overnight, pour the lentils into a colander and rinse them thoroughly under lukewarm water for about one minute.

Once finished, leave the lentils in the colander and place the colander in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.

This method requires for you to rinse them a few times a day (preferably 3 or more times a day).

Step 3:
Rinse them a few times a day until sprouts are edible and the tails have reached a length you are satisfied with.

This should take about 2 - 3 days.

Enjoy <3
