Copal is a tree resin of MesoAmerican origin used widely throughout indigenous groups of the America's as well as East Africa. This particular form of copal is white and known for its sweeter aromatic qualities (at least compared to amber or black varieties).
I recently gifted my brother copal resin for house cleansings that he does once a week. He usually uses frankincense and myrrh or white sage smudge sticks but I figured he would enjoy trying out a different kind of resin.
Regular house cleansings have been a staple in our house for years. We usually use them during times of high stress, anger, forgetfulness or simply when we want to enhance or create positive energy within our household.
With a tong, light the charcoal. Wait about 20-30 seconds for it to ignite. |
Add sand or dirt in the bowl or incense burner and then lay charcoal. |
Lay copal resin on top of the charcoal and allow it to sit for a few seconds. |
Wait until you smell the aroma from the copal resin and then proceed to bless the house. |
As a rule of thumb, it is best to ensure there are no outside distractions (disruptive talking, television etc.) and that you set an intention before, during and after the ritual. Ensure that every aspect of your home is covered in the essence of copal - this includes outside. Try to be sure to cover all living and inanimate objects. This is crucial considering that this is a cleansing process and often times negative energy can linger in objects that are alive (such as plants) or touched often (like door knobs). Open windows to allow natural light access into your household. You can also utilize candles if you are cleansing at night.
Take your time and bless away!
