I always have to consider the fact that I am on a budget and therefore must be savvy when it comes to purchases. Here is some advice for fellow herbal enthusiasts who would like to get started on building up their herbal collection/apothecary without hurting their wallet.
1. I've learned that it is best to by in bulk, particularly when you are purchasing items that are meant for large parts of the body (such as skin) or meant to be used for long term use.
2. Buy herbs with multiple uses that are relevant to your most pertinent needs. Most of my favorites can be used for multiple uses and ailments. For example, I use Ashwagandha for increase in energy, stress/anxiety and insomnia.
3. Window shop. I usually like to purchase at local shops for instant gratification. However, you can access sites like Mountain Rose Herbs to see if you can find cheaper prices. It is always best to buy in bulk when you buy online due to shipping. It can be time consuming but it always pays off.
4. Be conscious of weight and price!
For example, it may seem like a deal to buy an 10 ml essential oil for 5 dollars versus a 1/2 oz bottle of the same oil for a couple dollars more (especially if is an essential oil you use a lot). Don't be penny wise, pound foolish.
5. Always read the ingredients. Your product should be 100% all natural - meaning free of additives, fillers, and carrier oils which weaken the pureness of your product. You lose money by purchasing low quality herbs and substances since they are usually not as effective.
6. Sign up for newsletters for online herbal shops that will inform of you sales they have going on.
7. Barter. If you have a particular herb you would like to try out but are unwilling to pay a certain amount for it try to see if you can find someone who would be willing to exchange your product for another type of herb or for an exchange of services (like work exchange).
*Disclaimer: I do not endorse any of the aforementioned companies listed on this blog post. I encourage you to do extensive research prior to purchasing herbs . It is always best to speak to a medical physician, clinical herbalist or any other trained or credentialed adviser before consuming herbal products.
