For many folks such as myself the very cost of herbs require a reasonable investment. One of the things that I have had the hardest time grappling over involves dealing with how to ensure that I always get my money's worth when I purchase herbs. Though this is just the tip of the iceberg, below you will find a few tips that I have used over the years to ensure that I get the most of my herbal purchases.
1. Mix essential oils with carrier oils
I have a tendency to take my essential oils and place them directly on my skin (like I do with lavender during stressful moments or rosemary when I want clarity). This can be wasteful at times so I have instead adopted the practice of mixing carrier oils (grapeseed oil, coconut oil, olive oil etc.) and adding a few drops of essential oil. Just place the oil in an amber jar and store it in a dark place.
2. Evaluate how you use them and how often
Sometimes I find that making tea from roots prove more wasteful then grinding the root and using a small amounts as powder for drinks and smoothies. Experiment with the many forms of using herbs - it will prove useful and cost effective in the long run
3. Tinctures
Tinctures usually involve steeping a fair amount of fresh (or dried) herb into a jar filled with either brandy or vodka. The properties of the herb are extracted more effectively, resulting in a powerful and concentrated rendering of the original herb.
4. Improve Storage Habits
One of the main things you are told regarding herbs is to always keep them in an cool and dry place. Other ways of preserving them including freezing them and refrigeration. They better you handle your herbs the more you can preserve them.
